外國語學(xué)院的前身是外語系，英語專業(yè)始建于1995年，隨著學(xué)校辦學(xué)規(guī)模的不斷擴(kuò)大，2000年成立了外國語學(xué)院。經(jīng)過十幾年的發(fā)展，外國語學(xué)院的辦學(xué)已初具規(guī)模，以培養(yǎng)有扎實(shí)外語功底的，能適應(yīng)新時代社會經(jīng)濟(jì)建設(shè)和文化交流需求的復(fù)合型、應(yīng)用型人才為辦學(xué)宗旨。
學(xué)院下設(shè)教授委員會辦公室、學(xué)科辦公室、教學(xué)辦公室、綜合辦公室、學(xué)團(tuán)辦公室、英語系、大學(xué)外語一部、大學(xué)外語二部、語言實(shí)驗(yàn)與自主學(xué)習(xí)中心等10個部門。
外國語學(xué)院承擔(dān)英語專業(yè)本科教學(xué)任務(wù)以及英語專業(yè)的第二外語課程；全校本科生、大專生和研究生等大學(xué)外語教學(xué)任務(wù)；為全校學(xué)生開設(shè)外語選修課程；另外，還為全校學(xué)生開設(shè)日語、德語、俄語等公共選修課程。
經(jīng)過多年的努力，外語學(xué)院為社會各界輸送了大量外語人才。英語專業(yè)學(xué)制四年，每年招生規(guī)模穩(wěn)定在三個班（90人），英語系共有英語語言文學(xué)、商務(wù)英語、英語+小語種三個教研團(tuán)隊(duì)。英語專業(yè)的教學(xué)質(zhì)量已經(jīng)在國內(nèi)得到廣泛認(rèn)可，學(xué)生在全國性的英語演講比賽之中屢有獲獎，最好成績?yōu)?ldquo;外研社杯”全國大學(xué)生英語演講大賽國家級一等獎?？忌谝恢驹镐浫÷蕿?00%，具有優(yōu)良的生源條件。學(xué)院畢業(yè)生分布在全國各個教學(xué)、科研院所和政府機(jī)關(guān)、企事業(yè)單位，為國家及內(nèi)蒙古的經(jīng)濟(jì)建設(shè)做出了重大貢獻(xiàn)?，F(xiàn)在正在努力申報英語語言文學(xué)碩士點(diǎn)。
外國語學(xué)院現(xiàn)在擁有在編教職工人數(shù)97人，專任教師93人，其中教授7人，副教授34人，講師41人，助教及其他15人。師資隊(duì)伍中78%以上具有碩士學(xué)位，具有博士學(xué)位和在讀博士共計5人，是一支學(xué)歷和職稱層次較高、年齡結(jié)構(gòu)合理、具有創(chuàng)新精神和發(fā)展?jié)摿Φ膶W(xué)術(shù)隊(duì)伍。
學(xué)院十分重視師資隊(duì)伍培訓(xùn)與建設(shè)。近年來，先后有53人通過出國留學(xué)項(xiàng)目、暑期短訓(xùn)等項(xiàng)目成功到英、美、加拿大等國做訪問學(xué)者和出國深造，具有出國背景的人數(shù)占到總?cè)藬?shù)的55%；師資隊(duì)伍的學(xué)歷層次得到了多元化的提升，為學(xué)院的長遠(yuǎn)發(fā)展奠定了良好的基礎(chǔ)。
學(xué)校圖書館有外文閱覽室一個，擁有各類外語圖書資料6萬冊，學(xué)院擁有一個圖書資料室，擁有各類外語圖書資料1.6萬冊；學(xué)院現(xiàn)有語言實(shí)驗(yàn)室7個（280座）、數(shù)字化廣播電臺一座、大學(xué)生自主學(xué)習(xí)中心2個（320座）以及40座的同聲傳譯實(shí)驗(yàn)室。
學(xué)院注重廣大教師的教學(xué)研究水平的提升，近年來，我院教師在全國各類學(xué)術(shù)刊物發(fā)表文章716篇，著作73部；學(xué)院教師積極投身于校級、內(nèi)蒙古自治區(qū)級以及國家級教研項(xiàng)目的申報，承擔(dān)了各級縱向課題256項(xiàng)，橫向課題24項(xiàng)。其中有2個教研立項(xiàng)獲得自治區(qū)級優(yōu)秀教學(xué)成果一等獎，為學(xué)院的深層次發(fā)展奠定良好的基礎(chǔ)。
The history of theForeign Language School dates back to 1995 when it was known as the ForeignLanguage Department. In time, with the increasing expansion of IMUST, theForeign Language School was eventually established in 2000. After nearly twodecades of development, the school has now taken shape, aiming to cultivateinter-disciplinary and application-oriented talents with both foreign languageproficiency and practical skills which can accommodate the needs of both socialand economic development and of cultural exchanges.
Ourschool consists of 10 departments, namely, the Professors Committee, theDiscipline Construction Office, the Teaching Affairs Office, the GeneralOffice, the Students’ Affairs Office, the English Department, the First Officeof College English,  the Second Office of College English, Language Labs,and the Language Test & Learning Center.
Weoffer an array of undergraduate courses, including second foreign languagecourses, for the English majors; for undergraduate and graduate students of theuniversity, we offer college foreign languages, elective foreign courses, andpublic elective courses of Japanese, German and Russian.
EnglishMajor is a four-year system with a stable annual enrollment of three classes(some 90 students). The English Department has three teaching and researchteams, covering English Language & Literature, Business English, and MinorLanguages. The teaching quality of the English Department has been widelyacknowledged in China. For years, our students have won various awards andhonors in national and regional events, including the first prizes of NationalEnglish Speech Contests. We have excellent student sources and all our studentshave been accepted by their first choices in their entrance examinations. Sofar, we have nurtured more than a thousand of qualified talents in English whoare now working in various teaching and scientific research institutions,government bodies, enterprises and government-sponsored institutions. They havemade significant contributions to the economic development of Inner Mongolia aswell as the whole nation. We are now applying for an English MA Program.
Currently,we are staffed with 93 full-time faculties of the 97 registered staff members,including 7 professors, 34 associate professors, 41 lecturers, 15 teachingassistants and others. Over 78% of our staff are master’s degree holders. Fiveof the faculty are PhDs or PhD candidates. We are a team with substantialacademic background, reasonable age composition, innovation capacity anddevelopment potentials.
Weattach great importance to faculty development. In recent years, throughvarious international cooperation programs, we have sent 53 of the facultymembers as visiting scholars to such countries as the UK, the US, and Canada.At present, 55% of our staff members have overseas educational background. Thediversified upgrading of the academic level of our faculty has laid a solidfoundation for the future development of our school.
Thereis one Foreign Language Reading Room in the University Library, housing over60,000 volumes of books in foreign languages. Besides, our school also has itsown library with 16,000 volumes of foreign language books. Currently, ourschool is equipped with 7 language labs (280 seats), a digital radio station,and 2 self-study centers (320 seats).
Wealso lay great stress on the upgrading of the teaching and research capacitiesof our faculty. In recent years, our teachers have published more than 716articles in different academic journals and authored 73 books, and participated256 government-sponsored research programs and 24 crosswise ones. Two of theseprograms respectively won the first prizes for outstanding teaching achievementin Inner Mongolia. All these have laid a solid foundation for the furtherdevelopment of the Foreign Language School.
